Photo of the Day - 8 March 2013

There was plenty for the New Zealand cricket team to get excited about and to celebrate yesterday. Here the whole team surrounds 32-year-old debutant Bruce Martin after one of his four wickets.

But we've followed cricket long enough (50-plus years and counting) to know that today is a new game, and cricket is a funny game. Congratulations to the New Zealand players however on one of the most emphatic all-round days of test cricket against a top side that we can remember for many a day; well done!

Cricket going well today, and I am happy for them.

So how is the softball team doing?

Breakers had a great win last night eh KS, down to the wire, and on they came.

SBW average but grew into the game, good to see, now if he will just settle on league, drop the boxing and promote his brand in a respectful manner he will go OK.

Cronulla is stuffed!

This is the time of year I love the most, league, league and more league, sprinkled with rugger, and basketball.

Heaven on earth.

Once again we see NZ batsmen doing their best to sabotage an excellent bowling effort and a fine start by Rutherford and Fulton excepeted.

Willimson, Taylor and Brownlee giving their wickets away when one more big innings is needed. Looks like McCullum is in ODI mode and Watling is out not playing a shot.

Instead of batting England out of the game we may finish up struggling to survive on the last day unless the bowlers can do it again.

Not good enough despite Rutherfords effort.

Looking at the scores so far pdm, the next best from either side is Fulton, and other than that, no batsman has gone past 50. I would suggest that it's a pitch that batsmen never feel quite "in" on.

And don't forget; Bruce Martin has a first-class hundred this year, and Neil Wagner is a reasonably competent tailender, so there's no reason why we can't squeeze out another hundred or so, especially if McCullum stays in.
