Tweet of the Day - 14 November 2012

The best humour is sometimes unintentional, as Fran O'Sullivan tweets:

Oh dear; perhaps Eddie needs to employ the bloggers' equivalent of the age-old carpenter's saying "measure twice, cut once". Or maybe Eddie needs check out what the Urban Dictionary says about "self-depreciating"...

Many a true word is spoken in error!!

"Self-deprecation, or self-depreciation, is the act of belittling or undervaluing oneself. It can be used in humor and tension release."

In other words, using expressions like 'Fat Finger Syndrome' to make light of one's mistakes.

I don't understand your post at all.

No Olive; I don't imagine that you do...

The post is perfectly clear to me

Olive Brown said...

Could you please explain it to me Bunk? I'd be very grateful.

Olive Brown said...

Your definition is for "Demeyer".

Eddie used the term "self depreciating humour".

I don't get it still.

I don't get it either Keeping Stock. It's often said of John Key that his appeal comes from his self deprecaiting humour - he makes jokes about himself - how is that different? I think Olive might be right.

Bunk will be able to see why you don't get it either,Tony.
The English language is rather subtle.

I get a horrible image in my head when I read your name, not because of what might occur in prison, in those double bunks (shudder!) but because I see two Bunks.
One is bad enough.

I'm sincerely hoping Bunk will help me to understand this post. He claims to have a perfectly clear understanding of it, but hasn't provided any explanation yet and I did ask politely. It couldn't be that he doesn't understand it at all and was just bullshitting, could it? Bunk?

Politeness can seem superficial sometimes.

Self deprecation = self criticism, pointing out one's own weaknesses.

Self depreciation= lowering one's own value, belittling oneself, downgrading one's own standing, self-loathing.

This may,or may not, be helpful, Olive Brown (and Tony).

Double bunk - My original request was entirely polite, not "seemingly". I'm feeling a little less forgiving now, with Bunk not fronting up at all! Perhaps he's realised he was wrong after all. Still, the day is young, he might still show.
Thanks for your clarification. There are various interpretations, but it's clear that Eddie means that the Standard has not been afraid to make fun of itself. Keeping Stock has misunderstood and Bunk has raced in to support Keeping Stock's misread.
Still, Bunk can put me right with some explanation of his own. I'd appreciate that very much.

Oh lighten up Olive, and don't be so pedantic. Read the Urban Dictionary definition, and you'll see that it's a very good fit for the "person" (actually Eddie has been a number of persons over the years) that Fran O'Sullivan was tweeting about.

Olive Brown said...

But Keeping Stock, the Urban Dictionary definition is for "Demeyer", not "self-deprecaiting", the point I am trying to make.
Demeyer isn't self-deprecaiting.
Eddie didn't say The Standard was "Demeyer"., did he?

Olive, nice that you have the time to keep coming back to repeatedly ask for an explanation. I have been out running a business and upping the GDP of this country. But I congratulate you on your persistence over something so trivial. So, to enlighten you, the post was perfectly clear to me because Eddie (who I have no idea who he is - is he the 'confuser'?) meant to say self deprecating and instead used self depreciating - as in demeaning himself when he didnt intend to. Thats humorous and well pointed out. Yes KS posted 'Demeyer' but I dont think that drew away from his intended message.

Fran O'Sullivan knew what Eddie meant, but he said something else. A Freudian slip. That was the point of her tweet.

KS knew what he meant, and acknowledged making similar gaffes from typing errors. That was his point of the post.

Olive Brown knows (had to be very careful with the spelling there) and Tony knows (maybe not) that there seems to be some humour at the expense of poor old Eddie, and if the two words can be made to mean the same thing (actually three words if we count "deprecaiting") then the joke is on Fran O'Sullivan and KS. Our friend Bunk, on the other hand, might deserve a good old whacking around the ears just for laughing out loud.
