Those of us who class ourselves as Cycling Fans do get sick and
tired of defending the sport against the knockers who bang on about drugs and
cheating, but can you imagine what it’s like to be a top rider? Bradley Wiggins
has helpfully provided an insight at the Stage 8 press conference.
Asked about the whispering campaign about his “sudden” success, he delivered this serve to all of us armchair critics:
“I say they’re just fucking wankers. I cannot be doing with people like that. It justifies their own bone-idleness because they can’t ever imagine applying themselves to do anything in their lives. It’s easy for them to sit under a pseudonym on Twitter and write that sort of shit, rather than get off their arses in their own lives and apply themselves and work hard at something and achieve something. And that’s ultimately it. Cunts!”
Well said Brad, is it any wonder that football and tennis run such shoddy
drug-testing programmes, when cycling and athletics show what happens when you
actually start catching people?
It's a timely reminder as Lance Armstrong fights charges, based on not much more than a similar anti non-continental European smear campaign and the word of confessed and convicted cheats, that's it's sometimes a bit too easy to assume the worst in people.

Good post JS; it was high time you did something to earn your keep!
I take his comments to mean that Bradley is a bit irritated!
I sometimes think that Steve Hansen is permanently struggling to hold back similar feelings...
Read the rules for commenting Jasper. And also, note that this post was actually the work of James Stephenson, and not me.
I'm a fan of cycling and love the tour .. watch as much as I can .. the last 30ks always good value.
Anyway, been really busy over the past few days and off to dinner with JK tonight .. will say high on behalf of all.
I'm sure there are a few (sics) here but who cares?
Mr Wiggins needs to be given a little heads up explaining to him that he gets paid (very well indeed I understand) to perform his "sport" solely because those "cunts" buy things he advertises, usually after sitting in their arm chairs watching him perform (or not) instead of getting out and doing the actual work.
Of course many of these "cunts" perform useful tasks, something Mr Wiggins (and most other professional sportsmen)has yet to accomplish.
I have no opinion at all on Mr Wiggins or indeed any other cyclist nor any time for those who simply abuse the anonymity of the internet to abuse but the history of certain sports, including but not limited to cycling means that questions about improvers will always be asked. No amount of bad language or abuse from Mr Wiggins will alter that.
Disclaimer, I believe chemical assistance should be made legal in all professional sports with a separate competition set up for those who do not wish to accept the long term consequences - called amateur.
..those who do not wish to accept the long term consequences - called amateur...
Unitl Tinman some amateur wants to be more amatuer than the others and seeks a little chemical assistance adn then the whole sorid cycle (excuse moi) starts all over agin and we set up another competition where........
@ Tinman and Paul; I have sympathy for both points of view. At least if everyone was openly taking juice, knowing the potential health risks, there would be a level playing field. But God help us if professional sport ended up as grotesque a spectacle as professional wrestling!
KS, pro sport IS professional wrestling - note the SBW rugby travesty.
Paul, no chemist worth his while will work for nothing and no "sportsman" worth his while will risk all if there is no reward therefore the question will never arise, pro's will dope, amateurs will not (simply because it won't be worth their while doing so.
I think you're mistaken there Tinman. You only have to look at the rewards that Seb Coe has extracted from his amateur exploits on the track or the mana that the likes of Pine Tree carry from theirs. People will cheat purely to carry that "winner" tag.
James, no.
Coe (and others) were in no way amateur.
They (all of them) had corporate backing enabling them to compete whenever and wherever they wished just as certain nations/entities enlisted their athletes in armed forces, govt. departments etc.
If sport is split between pro and amateur there is no reason to cheat at amateur level because there no gain, no incentive to win what will be seen as a second class (it will be) competition.
