Is it any wonder we have a problem with youth and alcohol; the Herald reports:
A mother who gave her 16-year-old daughter vodka before allowing her to wander the streets of Ohakune during the annual mardi gras criticised police when they returned the girl to her motel.Sergeant Mike Craig said the mother did not think she had done anything wrong.

It's illegal for a parent to supply alcohol to a 16yo?
Since when?
You're right of course Tinman; the brain wasn't functioning too well at 6am. Still, it's bloody stupid to encourage a 16yo to drink spirits, send them out on their own whilst or after drinling spirits on a night when thousands of boozed yobbos were around, then moan at the Police when they bring her home for her own safety.
Hogwash KS.
The report does not state the girl was doing anything wrong except wandering around the "mardi gras", does not state the girl was even affected by alcohol let alone drunk or incapable, does not state the amount of vodka she was given and is in fact just another of a long series of Herald slime anti-alcohol beat-ups.
I suspect the mother thought, as I would as a responsible parent, that it is better to give a sixteen year old a controlled amount of alcohol rather than let her beg, borrow or steal an uncontrolled amount leaving herself open to scum who would do their best to get the kid drunk and abuse her.
