The Big Wet

We went to a wedding yesterday, and when we left the recption around 8pm, light rain was falling. This morning we've awoken to a real drenching; great for the garden and for the paddocks around us, but not so good for those planning outdoor pursuits today.

La Nina has certainly produced great grass-growing conditions so far; a few days of rain, then a few days of sunshine, then a few more days of rain. Unfortunately, the rain's not getting all the way to the foot of the country, and Otago and Southland are drying out. But the hill country farmer we chatted with last night is delighted; he's had a wonderful spring and early summer, and reckons that winter feed is not going to be a major problem this year.

The cockies may be delighted, but the campers and the sports organisers probably aren't quite so effusive. But there's a plus side; we have a busy, busy week ahead, so a day at home catching up on MySky and reading probably isn't a bad thing. In the meantime, the pitter-patter of raindrops on the roof is a bit more like a cacophany, but we need to think of how it's benefitting the vegetable garden, which is thriving!

Be careful out there.

Southland cockies aren't delighted. They've been feeding out their winter stores of silage for weeks now and the brassicas they've sown for the winter aren't sprouting because of the dry. Sales of palm kernel expeller are rocketing down here and that's bad news for the Indonesian forests and for the cows of Southland. That stuff is crap.

I'm sure that North Islanders would like nothing more than for this rain to move down your way Robert; we've had the better part of half an inch of it just in the last two hours!
