Guilty ...

  • John Skinner (right) - guilty of murdering Sgt Don Wilkinson and of the attempted murder of a second unnamed police officer
  • Iain Clegg (left) - guilty of the manslaughter of Sgt Don Wilkinson

We've been critical of a few jury verdicts over the last couple of years. We reckon that this one is pretty much spot on.

Skinner and Clegg were part of a methamphetamine (P) operation. We've seen first-hand the harm that P can do to individuals and to communities; it's a vile, insidious drug. The death of Don Wilkinson in an attempt to track this P operation was a bitter irony. But his family can now take comfort in the fact that two men have been held accountable for his death. The justice system has done its job.

Arohanui Don Wilkinson.

I presume you were at the trial and listened to all the evidence and expert witnesses who were called? I mean why would you say something on a public forum unless you knew it to be true? Most of what we read these days lacks any care or consideration for the truth and thats wrong. You've stated that both Iain Clegg and Jon Skinner were part of a P Operation, that is factually untrue. The operation was on Skinner only, nothing to do with Clegg. Clegg had only been at the property (to pick up car parts) for less than 10min when two men wearing balaclavas were seen sneaking around his car, where his girlfriend was waiting for him. When challenged the two men took off. Given the Skinner family had suffered a home invasion not three months previous, it's not unreasonable there was concern these two men might return. I don't condone the fact the two men were subsequently shot, one fatally, not at all, quite the opposite - but Clegg did'nt shoot anyone, he punched one of the men who is alive today, once and that was only after that same man walked towards him with his hands up in a martial arts style like he wanted to fight. Everything i've stated was heard as evidence at the trial and not disputed by the crown. Looking at Cleggs actions alone, is he guilty of manslaughter?
